Week 31: We do our own Stunts! 1-5-08

The experts write: “I was folding laundry while he played, and I turned around for two seconds and he was gone! Sound familiar? Many moms of 8-month-olds share your experience. Your formerly placid infant may have turned into a little tornado, on the go from dawn until dusk. Long naps are a thing of the past as baby resists your attempts to make him slow down. Dressing, diaper changing, meals--and anything else that constrains the growing urge to explore--may result in battles. The reason for all this activity is simple: because he can. With each passing day, your baby gains new tools for discovering and making sense of his environment. He's got skills to perfect, and a whole world to explore. Imagine suddenly finding yourself, after six months of inactivity, in an exciting and beautiful locale filled with every sort of amusement. Would you sleep?”

On New Years Day, Grandpa Gerardo was taking a nap and Max decided to join his grandpa for a snooze.

With new combo stunt moves and trying to sit up come many new bumps and tiny bruises. Lots of short term crying is usually healed with me walking away as if I did not hear anything and just ignoring the situation. Even though I safely fasten both babies into the changing table, they still manage to twist and turn away from me while I'm trying to put their diapers on them. A tip to keep them entertained just long enough for a quick change is to place a mega file office clip on the top side board of their changing table with a squeaky toy. In my case, I have a bright red bird and the clip I use is one that my sister gave me for my car so that I can see my babies as I drive. Sometimes I switch out the toy for the mirror and they enjoy looking up at themselves.

On Wednesday night when Eddie came home from work, Max crawled backward to him!! It was so exciting to him travel from one side of the room to the next! Sergio is also trying to crawl. He lets out giant shrieks when he tries to move and his body goes nowhere. Both babies are using the skills they have learned in the past, rolling, grabbing, and push-ups in combinational movements. We place their toys a foot or two in front of them so they can reach and crawl to them.

Oatmeal, Malt o’ Meal and scrambled eggs, and beans has become a morning staple for the whole family. While our lunch can vary, it usually is something with chicken and veggies. The babies enjoy a light snack of squished up fruit usually an apple or banana. Since they are eating more, they are drinking less formula. We are still practicing using the zippy cups. The weeks are going by faster and faster!!
